Update from your Chairman

Friday, September 8, 2017

We are geographically diverse, and seldom get to socialize. Our biggest social event is the Annual Meeting in December. I hope more of you can come to that fun event, which includes a subsidized dinner that is preceded by a swim at the Saratoga YMCA. In the meantime, we are organizing a calendar that will have more pool events than we have had in years. We will post the events as soon as plans are formalized, but the first one (Save the Date!) is Sunday, October 15, at the Glens Falls High School. This meet will be different, since we are running it concurrently with a YMCA youth meet. That means we will be able to watch these fast youngsters during our breaks and maybe we can provide role models for them. Another new event is that for the first time in years, Binghamton is going to host a State Championship meet in April.

Besides a lot of meets I encourage all the locall workout groups to host social events, naturally coupled with swimming. Hopefully you can open these events up to masters swimmers who may have to travel a bit for a fun event. Last year we had a cross-country ski and swim event in Glens Falls that we will repeat, and some other events.

I've been asked to introduce myself to those that do not know me. My swimming credentials include being the Masters Coach at the Glens Falls YMCA, a USA, and YMCA Official, event dirfector and volunteer for several open water swims, and an avid swimmer. I took on the Chairmanship after retiring from a career in consulting and college teaching/research as an environmental scientist. When I first got into swimming and discovered that it was the "Fountain of Youth," I wrote an article in 2009 for Streamlines that sums up how I feel about swimming. It's still available here: https://www.usms.org/articles/580

We need more ideas for events, communications, and ways to share our passion for swimming. Please feel free to contact me.
